On April 6, 1973, Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees faced Luis Tiant of the Boston Red Sox as the first designated hitter in a regular Major league Baseball game. The American League adopted the DH almost 52 ½ years ago. Due to the low batting averages of pitchers, they decided to let someone else bat for the pitcher. The modern era of MLB was in its 74th season when the change was implemented to add more excitement to the game and in 2022 the DH was adopted by the National League, as well. How did this little tidbit find its way into the Rethink Tank? I am glad you asked? Long before 1973, the DT rule came into effect. As the division between the clergy and the laity became more pronounced, the DT began to develop in the church. A long period of Christian history began which resulted in the unofficial, but very real, designated thinker (DT) position. The common man forfeited his right to do his own thinking in the theological realm. They were dependent on the church to tell them what the Bible said and meant. Surely the full-time religious experts were better equipped to understand God’s thoughts. This mindset has endured through the centuries, and is alive and well in our day. Are we really willing to allow the state of our lives be determined by what we are told to think by someone else? Sure, you can have a batting coach help you with your thinking, but no one can take the bat out of your hands and bat for you. Mature sons and daughters of God who make maximum impact in the earth must function on what they, personally, know to be true. The state of your entire existence is affected by who does your thinking, and you are the one held responsible. John says the teacher Himself abides in you, and He is the one you ultimately make your decisions with. No man can usurp His place, and He will guide you into all truth no matter who else’s thoughts it separates you from.
