Have you ever made an irreversible investment in something or someone? You made a decision, acted on it, and now it has permanent consequence. Some of our actions are relatively insignificant, but some forever alter the future. With the benefit of hindsight, we may look back on the pivotal decision with joy or regret. The Father, Son, and Spirit, in perfect agreement—because that is how they do everything—made a cosmos-altering decision. The Word became flesh and came to Bethlehem via the womb of Mary. The maker of mankind became one of His creations. Many think this incarnation of the Word was a temporary bodily phase necessary for His death on the cross. After the body served its purpose, He went back to heaven in the form He previously had. But no, He is fully God and fully man, simultaneously and eternally. That’s right. Jesus still has a body, so there is a human in the Trinity. Christ is so entangled with man that when Saul persecuted humans on earth He was persecuting Christ in heaven. Jesus fused Himself to the human race to become sin so we could become the righteousness of God in Him. Earlier in this blog I pointed out that with the benefit of hindsight we might come to regret some of our biggest decisions; however, God does not regret the incarnation decision. He is not limited to hindsight. His foresight is 20/20, as well. He sees how the incarnation will bring to fruition the restoration of all things. We were created for a higher more exciting life than we have even imagined, the most thrilling part is that it starts here and now in this realm. You are a permanent beneficiary of the permanent commitment to humanity enacted by Jesus Christ in whom we live and move and have our being. “Rejoice” does not seem like a strong enough word for the response to this revelation, but until we come up with a better word, I will say: Rejoice! And again, I say, rejoice.
