One beautiful fall afternoon several years ago, I was watching a Baylor Bear football game from Row 67 at Floyd Casey Stadium. Row 67 was the top row—where the breeze was best and the crowd was the sparsest. Suddenly, I caught a glimpse of a squirrel darting toward my feet. About two yards before reaching me, he leapt down a row and sprinted to the nearest aisle. Then, he took a left and descended 15 rows, where he cut right at Row 51 like a wide receiver running a pass route. By now, he was making his way toward the most populated part of the stadium. Suddenly, the fans in that section of Row 51 got very active. As the squirrel scurried by the feet of everyone on the row, he inspired an unplanned one-row wave. He made a quick escape into the aisle near the 50-yard line, turned left, and dashed down toward field level. When he reached the field, he shot out into the midst of the Baylor University Golden Wave Band. Thank goodness the band members were standing still, playing at the time. After zipping through the maze of band members’ legs like a bushy-tailed pinball, the little guy broke toward the north end zone. He made it successfully to a safe spot around the 20-yard line. He took a deep breath—he was finally safe. Then, all of a sudden, all 300 members of the band turned and started marching right toward him with instruments blaring. He rushed to the exit tunnel by the end zone and disappeared. Have you ever felt like that squirrel? It seemed like the whole world was out to get him. His tiny legs got a workout, but imagine the workout his little heart endured. Next time you feel like that rattled rodent, take a deep breath and remember—you are not alone. If you settle down and listen to the Lord, He can walk you through any maze in life without panic.
