Does God’s goodness need to be defended? No question—it should be celebrated. It should be joyfully testified to with grateful hearts. It should be recognized and serve as a guiding theme throughout all our theological beliefs and assertions. Defending the goodness of God with a heart of love, in order to combat the deistic or Zeus-like concept of God, is a compassionate move. At first, some people defend the goodness of God to convince themselves—and that too is okay. Here’s where things can get off track: some people build a mega-powerful Satan to take the pressure off God. In this sense, He does not need defending. Some people become devil-focused because they feel they must continue to bolster their own belief in the goodness of God. Once we truly taste and see the goodness of the Lord, the devil becomes a non-factor in maintaining the belief that He is good—and only good. An obsessive desire to pin blame elsewhere might be an indication that we are still trying to convince ourselves. God is good, and good is God. He is the source of any trace of goodness found anywhere, and there is no evil in Him. We are the ones on mission on this planet, and there is no reason to focus on the enemy to keep pressure off God.
